Children’s Emergency Department

Creating a Welcoming Environment for Young Patients

A visit to the Children’s Emergency Department can be a stressful experience for children and their families. The unfamiliar surroundings, medical equipment, and new sounds can often feel overwhelming. That’s why, when Leighton Hospital’s Children’s Emergency Department was renovated, we aimed to create a more welcoming, child-friendly space—separate from the adult emergency department—where young patients could feel at ease.

To achieve this, we commissioned professional artist Dan Savage to develop a concept with staff which became a series of wildlife-themed artworks that bring colour, warmth, and a sense of adventure to the space. Inspired by the rural surroundings of Leighton Hospital, the artwork features a variety of animals and birds, making the environment more engaging and less intimidating for children.

These vibrant illustrations do more than just brighten up the department—they help children understand their hospital experience. The animals and birds in the artwork explain staff uniforms, helping young patients recognise the different roles of doctors, nurses, and healthcare teams. They also share fun facts, providing an educational and interactive element to keep children engaged during their visit.

By integrating art into the hospital environment, we hope to reduce anxiety, provide positive distractions, and create a more comforting space for children and families when they need it most.
