Mural in Frailty ward

Staff on the Frailty Assessment Unit wanted a creative way to engage patients during corridor walks, encouraging conversation and connection as part of their assessments. Many patients experience memory loss, confusion, or anxiety, and staff recognised the power of familiar places in helping to ease those feelings.

To support this, illustrator Melanie Smith of Smith and Wonder was commissioned to create a railway-themed artwork featuring local landmarks chosen by the team. The design aimed to prompt reminiscence and spark conversation, helping patients feel more relaxed and engaged. Staff collaborated closely with the artist, including discussions on the landmarks but also important considerations such as colour palette—ensuring it was appropriate and accessible for elderly patients and those living with dementia.

The final piece is both functional and beautiful, encouraging connection, reminiscence, and movement as part of patient care.
